Frequently asked questions

What does the assessment process look like?

Dr. Boxer’s process typically takes into account the three most important perspectives into a child and their world. He begins with a detailed parent intake session to review your child’s full developmental history and clarify the parents’ concerns and assessment goals. This can take place on Zoom or more preferably in his South Pasadena office. The conversation is warm, supportive and collaborative.

Teachers, therapists and other practitioners see a different side of your child. Dr. Boxer will review all records, previous assessments, and connect with your child’s educational and wellness support teams. Depending on the case, he may have questionnaires or conduct interviews to collect additional information. If necessary, Dr. Boxer will conduct a school observation before testing.

The testing part of the assessment typically involves two full days of interactive activities and tests, designed to be engaging and rewarding for children. Dr. Boxer starts by getting to know your child and building a long relationship with them. The days are designed to be flexible around a child’s physical, emotional and mental needs. He aims for all the children who visit his office to enjoy their time there and most want to come back for more.

The team will assess and analyze information on cognitive functioning comprehensively across multiple domains, from IQ and academic performance to processing speed, executive functioning, fine motor skills, and emotional well-being. Parents and teachers will fill out rating scales to provide input on the child’s functioning and home and at school.

Post-assessment, Dr. Boxer and team provides a detailed report highlighting your child’s strengths and challenges. This includes potential diagnoses and personalized recommendations. If needed, accommodations and recommendations are included for schools in the report. Dr. Boxer concludes the assessment process with two feedback sessions to discuss these findings and next steps with you and your child. How do I explain the assessment to my child?

Explaining the assessment to your child in a reassuring and positive way is key. You might say something like, “We're going to visit and play games with someone who helps kids learn more about how brains think and feel. This person’s specialty is helping people discover their strengths and how to use them.” It's helpful to emphasize that it's not a test they need to study for or worry about. The games and questions are a way for the brain-people to understand how to help them better. Dr. Boxer also has the word “doctor” in his title but he is not the type that gives shots– he doesn’t like needles either. He is the type of doctor who likes to learn about kids’ brains.
