Frequently Asked Questions

What does the assessment process look like?

Dr. Boxer will begin with a detailed parent intake session to review your child’s full developmental history and clarify the parents’ concerns and assessment goals. If necessary, Dr. Boxer will conduct a school observation before testing. He will review all records, previous assessments, and connect with your child’s educational and wellness support teams. Our assessment typically involves two full days of interactive activities and tests, designed to be engaging and rewarding for children. We assess and analyze cognitive functioning comprehensively across multiple domains, from IQ and academic performance to processing speed, executive functioning, fine motor skills, and emotional well-being. Parents and teachers will fill out rating scales to provide input on the child’s functioning and home and at school. Post-assessment, we provide a detailed report highlighting your child’s strengths and challenges. This includes potential diagnoses and personalized recommendations. We also provide a feedback session to discuss these findings and next steps with you and your child.

Will my child want to participate?

Many parents worry about their child's willingness to participate, but we've found that children often enjoy our interactive approach. We strive to make the experience as engaging and comfortable as possible. We are exceptionally skilled in working with children and will take breaks as needed. Often, children find the activities interesting and enjoy the one-on-one attention. If you have concerns about logistics, we can discuss strategies during your initial consultation.

How do I explain the assessment to my child?

Explaining the assessment to your child in a reassuring and positive way is key. You might say something like, “We're going to visit someone who helps kids learn more about how they think and feel, so they can do their best.” It's important to emphasize that it's not a test they need to worry about, but a way for us to understand how to help them better.

Does Dr. Boxer take insurance?

We understand how important this is when considering getting an assessment like this. We realize that navigating insurance issues can be complex. While our office does not directly accept insurance, we do provide something called a 'super bill.' A super bill is a detailed invoice of the services provided, which you can submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement.
